STEPS TO HGV

Please see detailed below the steps required to enable you to gain your Class 2/Cat C Licence.

Passing this test will entitle you to drive any rigid vehicle up to 32 tonne.

Step 1 – Obtaining your provisional licence and medical

You will need to complete a driver’s medical; form D4 is required which you can download by clicking on the following link to apply for both D2 provisional licence application and D4 medical form: https://forms.dft.gov.uk/order-dvla-forms/

  • Once you have filled in your name and address details scroll down and click on –
  • D2/D4 Pack – Application for a driving licence for a lorry, minibus, or bus (D4 included).

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you will need to see an optician within 3 months prior to the medical examination. If you are going to book a new appointment for an optical test, please ensure that you take the D4 form with you and ask for the optician to complete the relevant sections.

What to take to the medical?

  • If you wear glasses/contact lenses for any reason - you need to take them to the medical, along with your recent prescription (as detailed above).
  • A complete list of all long-term medication.
  • Photographic ID i.e. driving licence or passport.
  • Your G.P.’s name & address.

Now you must complete your D2 form (provisional licence application) and send it to DVLA Swansea and enclose your completed D4 (medical form) and photo card driving licence. This application process can take up to 10-14 days.

Important Note: The medical is only valid for three months; therefore, it is extremely important that you send your forms D2 & D4 off to the DVLA as soon as possible – along with your driving licence.

As soon as you receive your licence back from the DVLA showing the provisional entitlement, the required theory tests (modules 1 & 2) can then be booked.

Step 2 – Theory tests

Module 1

You will need to pass the required LGV theory tests: multiple choice & hazard perception (Module 1). This is booked online, and they you need to attend at an official DVSA test centre local to you.

The theory test consists of 100 questions, and you will have 1 hour 45 minutes to complete the test and will need 85 correct answers to pass.

The hazard perception test consists of 20 clips. You will need to spot hazards as they occur and need to score 67 out of 100 to pass.

To help you pass your theory Test we will provide you with your own log in details for our online portal which provides LGV Multiple Choice & Hazard Perception material, and the CPC Module 2 Case Study material.

This online portal will give you a full revision guide along with full-length Mock Tests for you to be able to track your progress.

All the latest DVSA revision questions with lesson-based learning.

All the latest DVSA practice hazard perception videos with full explanations.

All the learning material and practice case studies you need for the LGV Driver CPC Module 2.

Module 2

If you do not already hold one, you will also need to obtain a Driver Qualification Card (DQC).

This is done by attending another theory test (Module 2) which goes towards obtaining your Initial Driver CPC qualification.

You will be asked questions based around several case studies. There are 7 case studies in the test, each with 6-8 questions. Case studies might include video, audio, text, or diagrams. You will need to attend at an official DVSA test centre local to you.

Once all the theory is completed, you will be ready for the practical aspect which will involve 2 further parts.

Step 3 – Practical driver training & tests

Module 3

The vocational driver training is typically split over 4 days, approx. 16 hours in total.

The test itself lasts around 90 minutes and you will be required to carry out a reversing exercise and demonstrate your driving skills on several different road types. The test is conducted by a DVSA Examiner.

Module 4

Practical assessment of associated knowledge test. You will have to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of certain vehicle-related issues like daily inspection, safety, load restraints, etc. The important thing is that this test is about demonstrating to the examiner that you know how to do the job.

Training for this is included within this package and you will need to score 80% overall, but in each subject area you must score at least 75%.

Finally!

Once all the above is completed and you have successfully passed you practical driving test, the examiner will send your driving licence away to have the new entitlement added & will supply a certificate to say the test has been passed.

CONGRATULATIONS – you have now become a fully qualified Class 2 LGV driver!

Something important to remember – which is last but not least….

Upon passing your Modules 2 and 4 as per the above, you will receive your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) which will then be valid for 5 years.

However, over the next 5 years you will need to complete 35 hours of CPC Periodic Training held in a classroom or remotely via ZOOM (recommended 7 hours of training to be carried out each year).

There is no test involved but the hours of attendance will be recorded with the DVSA.

This card must be kept valid and always carried with you whilst driving!
